China Executes Two Over Tainted Milk

China put two people to death today for their role in the tainted milk scandal, but many Chinese feel betrayed that a third wasn’t executed. The executed men, dairy farmer Zhang Yujun and production base manager Geng Jinping, were relative unknowns. Popular rage has centered instead on Tian Wenhua, the former general manager of the plant that intentionally laced melamine into milk so that it would test positive on protein tests.

Tian pleaded guilty to lesser crimes, and will spend life in prison. Many families of the children poisoned by the milk say they feel betrayed that she won’t face a firing squad. (More China stories.)
