School Lunches Threaten National Security: Ex-Officers

They're making our kids so fat, they won't be able to serve

(Newser) – Calorie-laden school lunches may do more than create a nation of tubby kids: They may create a nation that's too fat to fight, says a group of retired military officers. They contend unhealthy school cafeteria food is fattening kids to the point that fewer and fewer will be able to meet the military's physical fitness standards, causing the armed forces to wither in size.

In a report released today, the group found that 27% of 17- to 24-year-old Americans currently don't make the cut. It's pushing for the passage of a nutrition bill that would boost the healthfulness of school lunches, reports the AP. (Read more US military stories.)
