Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have split up, but they're still in regular contact and love each other very much, the former governor said last night, thanking friends and family for their support since the separation was announced. "I just spoke to Maria an hour ago before I came here," said Schwarzenegger, speaking at an Israeli Independence Day event in Los Angeles. "We both were saying the same thing—we're extremely blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people, by so many wonderful friends.

"We both love each other very much," he said. "We're very fortunate to have four extraordinary children. And we're taking it one day at a time. The bottom line is we want to thank all the people for their great, great support." Separate narratives are emerging about the split of one of America's best-known power couples, the Los Angeles Times notes. People close to Schwarzenegger describe a loving marriage that slowly dissolved, while Shriver's friends say she had been miserable in the marriage for years. (More Arnold Schwarzenegger stories.)
