Bebo, the most popular social networking site in Britain, announced today that it will launch an application platform modeled on that of Facebook, GigaOm reports. The launch is the result of a collaboration with its US counterpart, so that developers of Facebook apps will be able to port their work to Bebo with minimal effort.

Bebo is trying to be everyone’s friend, as the company has forged a close relationship with Facebook while concurrently working as a partner in Google’s OpenSocial initiative to ensure application compatibility. Those allegiances may be tested when OpenSocial launches, since Facebook has so far declined to join Google’s party. Bebo’ CEO said he hoped the two platforms could peacefully co-exist: “We don’t want it to be like Windows vs. Mac,” he said. (More Bebo stories.)
