When a 10-year-old California girl's mother checked on her at 1am Wednesday, the girl was in her bedroom, safe and sound. About two hours later she noticed the bedroom door was slightly open; the mother looked in, and the girl was gone. She was found six miles away yesterday afternoon, barefoot and wearing a different shirt than the one she'd been wearing the night before, covered in scrapes and bruises, some to her face. Now, police are looking for answers in the bizarre case, the LA Times reports.

"We don't know what happened," an LA police commander says. But "she didn't make it … a distance of some six miles by herself." Police assume the child was abducted, and are looking for two men in a black pickup truck that may have been involved. Officials are working on an exhaustive review of local business security footage; they say they now believe that multiple cars had been used, and that they have identified multiple locations she had been taken to.
