Not all the news is doom and gloom. Here are five of our favorite stories from the week to prove it:

  • Couple Adopts Friend's Daughters When She Dies: How does a family double in size from four to eight overnight? When a dying woman asks her best friend to adopt her four daughters after she dies—and the friend doesn't hesitate.
  • Heart-Warming Photo Saves 2 Dogs' Lives: Things weren't looking good for Kala and Keira, two female dogs at an Atlanta-area shelter. They were due to be euthanized, until Angels Among Us Pet Rescue posted a photo of the two of them that changed things in a matter of hours.
  • Man Who Built Sears Built Something Much More Incredible: Julius Rosenwald is best known as an American businessman who co-founded Sears. But a new documentary explores Rosenwald's lesser-known role as a Jewish philanthropist—one who created "the single-most important funding agency for African-American culture in the 20th century."

  • Bighearted Bikers Step Up for Widow: When Rhonda Thill got husband Randy's belongings back after he died in a motorcycle crash last month, her heartbreak was compounded when his wedding ring wasn't among them. Then some fellow bikers got wind of the situation.
  • Rescuers Keep Beached Orca Alive: A female orca was in dire straits after getting trapped on rocks off the coast of British Columbia. High tide wasn't coming back for eight hours, and there was no way she could survive that long. Cue the Good Samaritans' water brigade.
