(Newser) – If you like to put avocado on just about everything, you're in luck—if you can make it to Brooklyn, at least. Three friends from Italy are opening Avocaderia, what they call the world's first avocado bar. (A Food & Wine blogger thinks the folks behind one already open in Amsterdam might take exception to the boast.) As soon as the stand opens at Brooklyn's Industry City in Sunset Park on April 7, diners can choose from a menu featuring toasts, smoothies, salads, and bowls, and specials, notes Travel & Leisure. The idea is "painfully trendy," observes the Huffington Post, which rounds up reaction from those less than thrilled ("why I'm leaving new york," reads one tweet). Eater, meanwhile, thinks New York City has now officially become a "parody of itself."

The owners say they got the idea when one member of the trio traveled to Mexico and discovered the fruit. "They're tasty and healthy, and I ate them every day," he says, per the New York Times. Avocaderia plans to get its fruits from the Mexican state of Michoacán. The owners say they're sourcing the avocados from a specific group of farmers who are "respectful of the environment and the rights of their employees," though deforestation due to the increased demand for avocados has raised concerns. For now, prices for basic toasts and smoothies start at $7, and all orders are to go. (Here's more on the issues avocado orchards are causing in Mexico.)
