All big cities have problems. Some are just able to "tackle their problems and emphasize their strengths more efficiently than others," according to WalletHub, which rounds up the best US cities to call home with populations over 300,000. Three of the top 10 cities—based on affordability, economy, education and health, quality of life, and safety—are found in California, but the top three are spread across different states. Virginia Beach comes in at No. 1. The top 10 cities, with scores out of 100:

  1. Virginia Beach, Va.: 65.5
  2. Austin, Texas: 64.6
  3. Seattle, Wash.: 63.9
  4. San Diego, Calif.: 63.8
  5. Las Vegas, Nev.: 62.6
  6. San Francisco, Calif.: 62.6
  7. New York, NY: 62.2
  8. San Jose, Calif.: 62.2
  9. Honolulu, Hawaii: 61.4
  10. Portland, Ore.: 61
