A heady mix of past presidents and past and current first ladies paid their respects to Lady Bird Johnson, whose funeral was held in Austin, TX, today, after more 12,000 people filed past her coffin at the top of a marble staircase at the Johnson Library. She died Wednesday at 94.

Johnson was remembered as a source of strength in an era of turmoil, from the Civil Rights movement to the Vietnam War. “She seemed to grow calmer as the world around her grew more furious,” President Johnson's press secretary Bill Moyers recalled. And as if external events weren't challenge enough, he added, there were the "vesuvius eruptions" of her husband, which, others added, no one could quite handle as well as she did.
