It’s time for a gayer GOP, Meghan McCain writes in the Daily Beast. Opposing gay marriage is anathema to the GOP's founding beliefs of personal freedom and liberty, charges the mini maverick, and it’s a political misstep, too. Ditching the anti-gay rhetoric is critical to restoring the party’s big-tent appeal: “Millions of young and progressive Republicans are waiting for our party to return to its roots.”

These days, “gay Republicans are regarded in the same vein as ‘Jews for Hitler,’” but McCain points out that 28% of gay people voted for her dad, and the Log Cabin Republicans have 20,000 declared members. The pro-gay group, incidentally, formed when one Ronald Wilson Reagan campaigned against a 1978 California proposition against gay teachers. “Yeah, you read that right. The ultimate Republican rock star…helped fight the anti-gay proposition because he knew it was wrong.” (More Log Cabin Republicans stories.)
