Presidential contender John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth announced today that the breast cancer she battled after the last election cycle has recurred and advanced to Stage IV. The cancer has spread to her bones, a lung, and possibly other organs, her oncologist explained,  and is now inoperable. The couple, however, plans to push forward on John's campaign.

Treatment will try to shrink or slow the cancer and make her life comfortable. Elizabeth emphasized how well she's doing. "I don't look sickly, I don't feel sickly," she said. Her husband added that any would-be president who can't deal with this kind of intense pressure "in a focused, thoughtful way," isn't ready for the job. (More cancer stories.)
