Jews are fanning the flames of the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal, an elderly Italian bishop has allegedly claimed—and American Jewish groups aren't too happy about it. A Catholic website quotes Giacomo Babini, 81, as saying the "powerful and refined" nature of criticism of the church suggests a "Zionist attack." The Jews "do not want the church, they are its natural enemies," Babini is quoted as saying. "Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God killers."

After the American Jewish Committee found the website and slammed Babini for "slanderous stereotypes, which sadly evoke the worst Christian and Nazi propaganda prior to WWII," the priest denied having made the comments. Babini has, however, been previously quoted on the same site accusing Jews of exploiting the Holocaust, and his alleged comments come after a series of recent statements by Catholic clergy calling the sex abuse scandal an anti-Catholic plot, the Guardian reports.
