UN Relief Can't Keep Up With World's Hunger

The UN's food aid agency has only about half the money it needs to feed the world's hungry as rises in food prices take their toll, the AP reports. The World Food Program is $2.8 billion short of what it needs, says director Josette Sheera, and the shortfall is only expected to get worse as the year goes on.

The worldwide economic slump has left more people hungry than before 2008, and simultaneously pressed on the budgets of charities and aid agencies. "If food prices escalate again, the most vulnerable in the world will lose the one meal a day they are having," says Sheera. "If food prices double, that means one meal every two days."
