Emanuel Cleaver made quite a stir the other day when he called the debt ceiling deal a “sugar-coated Satan sandwich,” but he’s sticking by the remark—and even elaborating on it. In an interview this morning on Morning Joe, the host playfully asked what was in the Satan Sandwich. Clearly game, Cleaver replied, “You’ve got a little bit of sourdough on one side of the sandwich for poor people and then you have some onions for people who are on unemployment benefits and realize that’s not going to be in the deal.”

“It’s got a lot of stuff in it,” he concluded, but “very few things that are good.” Then with a smile, he added, “You serve it, of course, with a demon drink.” But probably the funniest part of the video below is the way that he matter-of-factly tosses out the phrase “post-Satan Sandwich passage” to transition to other topics, including bemoaning the lack of civility in Washington. He goes on to say that though the deal is bad, he thinks President Obama “did the best he could,” reports Politico. (More Emanuel Cleaver stories.)
