The saddest of codas to the story of Mike Patterson, who was paralyzed from the waist down after hitting his head in an attempt to save a Georgia girl from drowning: The 43-year-old has died, reports MyFoxAtlanta. It picks up a post that appeared on the Friends of Mike Patterson Facebook page today that reads, in part, "After a valiant battle, Mike succumbed to his injuries and related complications early this morning. Mike's family was by his side at the time of his death."

The post explains that Patterson never left the intensive care unit of a Rome, Georgia, hospital where, in addition to paralysis, he struggled with respiratory acidosis, pneumonia, a bacterial infection, and a blood clot.
