(Newser) Richard Matt's daughter feared her father would pay her a visit while he was on the lam, and she had good reason to think he might, according to police. "I always promised you I would see you on the outside," Matt wrote in a letter days before his escape, officials tell the Buffalo News. "I'm a man of my word." By the time his daughter opened the note on June 9, her father had already been on the run with David Sweat for three days.

Authorities say the woman had no idea of Matt's plans, reports CNN. In fact, she asked for police protection in case he tried to see her. Another interesting note: Officials say prison worker Joyce Mitchell reached out to Matt's daughter at his request, introducing herself as "a friend of your father's." They exchanged calls and texts for months. "Mitchell gave medical updates," one official says. "Nothing about the planned escape was mentioned." (Read more Richard Matt stories.)
