Prefer not to have your car stolen? Statistically speaking, you should probably stay out of California. Forbes reports that eight of the 10 US cities with the most car thefts per capita are in the Golden State. The data comes from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which found nearly all of the top hot spots for car thefts in 2015 were smaller cities. Car thefts rose for the first time in a few years last year, with the FBI noting a 1% increase nationally. Here are the top 10 cities where you're most likely to lose your ride:

  1. Modesto, Calif.: 4,072 car thefts in 2015
  2. Albuquerque, NM: 6,657
  3. Bakersfield, Calif.: 6,000
  4. Salinas, Calif.: 2,934
  5. San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, Calif.: 30,554
  6. Stockton-Lodi, Calif.: 4,656
  7. Pueblo, Colo.: 983
  8. Merced, Calif.: 1,605
  9. Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, Calif.: 25,001
  10. Vallejo-Fairfield, Calif.: 2,352
