Rep. John Conyers is retiring from the House seat he held for 52 years, and he wants his son to replace him—but voters in Michigan's 13th District may be wary of replacing a man accused of sexual misconduct with one accused of domestic violence. John Conyers III, 27, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence in Los Angeles County earlier this year but not prosecuted after his then-girlfriend suffered knife wounds during an argument, the New York Times reports. A restraining order against him is still in effect. According to a police report seen by NBC News on the Feb. 15 incident, the woman told police that Conyers, after accusing her of cheating, "body-slammed her on the bed and then on the floor where he pinned her down and spit on her."

The woman told police that Conyers chased her into the kitchen, where she threatened him with a knife and told him to leave the residence. She said he took the knife and swung it at her, cutting her on the arm. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office dropped the charges after deciding it couldn't be proven that the injury wasn't accidentally sustained while Conyers was disarming the woman. Conyers tells the Times that after a verbal disagreement got out of hand, she pulled a knife and was injured as he tried to take it away from her. He says he regrets his role in escalating the situation. Conyers says he was caught off guard by his father's endorsement and doesn't know if he's going to run for the seat. If he does, he will be competing against his uncle's 29-year-old great-nephew, Michigan state Sen. Ian Conyers. (More John Conyers stories.)
