An American who proposed to his girlfriend underwater never emerged to hear "I do," CNN reports. Steven Weber was on vacation in Tanzania with Kenesha Antoine in a cabin with a submerged bedroom when he apparently made the fatal proposal. "You never emerged from those depths, so you never got to hear my answer," Antoine wrote Friday on Facebook. "'Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you!!'" Video in the Facebook post shows the Louisiana man swimming up to the window with a handwritten note in plastic reading, "I can't hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. BUT ... Everything I love about you I love more EVERY DAY!" He shows her the ring, and she can be heard gleefully laughing.

In her post, Antoine says "the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruelest twist of fate imaginable." Calling him "my perfect love, my angel, my soul," she promises to "find you and marry you in the next lifetime, and the next, and the next, and the next ... I love you so much, and I always will." CNN was unable to reach her, but the Manta Resort, where they were staying, confirmed the death, and the State Dept. said an American tourist died in Tanzania. Weber worked at a drug rehabilitation center and had been a DJ, while Antoine is an attorney based in Baton Rouge, per Heavy. "It's not just a cliche that he always had a smile on his face," an old friend of Weber's tells the Advocate. "He was a fun guy." Tanzanian authorities are investigating his death.
