JK Rowling has been accused many times of being anti-trans, but this time, those accusations are making headlines in the mainstream media. The Harry Potter author, who's been called a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) in the past, tweeted on Thursday that she supports Maya Forstater, a researcher who lost her job after she claimed a person's biological sex can't be changed, Variety reports. "Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?" she tweeted, adding the hashtags #IStandWithMaya and #ThisIsNotADrill. The LGBTQ rights organization GLAAD says it offered Rowling a private meeting after the tweet and the author's team declined.
As for Forstater, a tax expert who lost a contract renewal for her position as a visiting fellow at the Centre for Global Development and then lost a court challenge over her termination, the controversy started when she tweeted last year, "What I am so surprised at is that smart people who I admire, who are absolutely pro-science in other areas, and champion human rights & womens rights are tying themselves in knots to avoid saying the truth that men cannot change into women (because that might hurt mens feelings)." A GLAAD rep says Rowling's support of Forstater's views "puts trans people at risk"; another sample reaction from the Human Rights Campaign simply reads: "Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary. CC: JK Rowling." Vox's take? Rowling "just ruined Harry Potter, Merry Christmas." Other outraged reactions abound on Twitter and the internet in general.
