(Newser) – Twelve people were shot in a series of separate acts of violence in one day in Baltimore. Five of them died. The shootings began about 2:30am Saturday and ended after 10pm, the Sun reports. "It goes without saying that the level of violence in the city yesterday was deeply disturbing and deeply troubling," the city's police commissioner said. Police have found no connection among the five fatal shootings, Michael Harrison said Sunday. None of the victims' names was released. The police department has shifted resources—including SWAT, K9 and traffic units—to what the commissioner called the “affected areas” of Baltimore.

The Ravens were hosting an NFL playoff game Saturday night, and the city council president alluded to the game in a statement, per the AP. "A day that should have been met with pride and community was once again flooded with violence and loss," said Brandon Scott, who is running for mayor. There were two more shootings in the city Sunday night. Two men, ages 20 and 21, were hospitalized. Last year, Baltimore had 348 homicides. (Baltimore police answered a call last month to find seven people had been shot.)
