Denmark's Queen Margrethe II tested positive for COVID-19 the day after she attended Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral in London, the palace says. The 82-year-old, who became Europe's longest-serving monarch after the death of the British queen, was one of around 2,000 guests at the Westminster Abbey funeral, the BBC reports. Margrethe, like her third cousin Elizabeth, is a descendant of Queen Victoria. The palace says she canceled her royal duties after testing positive Tuesday night and her oldest son, heir to the throne Crown Prince Frederik, will take her place at official events, reports the AP.
Margrethe last tested positive in February. The palace said at the time that she was fully vaccinated and only experienced mild symptoms. At Monday's service, she was in the same section as other European royals including King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Prince Albert II of Monaco, and King Philippe of Belgium. Margrethe, who became queen of Denmark in 1972, had planned to mark 50 years as monarch with events on Sept. 10 and 11, but celebrations were scaled down significantly after Elizabeth's Sept. 8 death.
