Carl Kruger may be on his way out of the closet—and into a jail cell. Kruger, a state senator from Brooklyn, was charged with accepting more than $1 million in bribes over the past five years in a federal indictment yesterday. Also named was Michael Turano, a Manhattan gynecologist who allegedly created shell companies to help conceal the bribes and, at least according to the New York Post, was Kruger’s secret live-in boyfriend.

Why is that significant? Because as Gawker points out, Kruger was one of a handful of Democrats to break with his party and defeat a bill that would have legalized gay marriage in New York. It’s worth noting, however, that the indictment doesn’t actually say Kruger is gay. It simply says that Kruger unofficially lived in Turano’s family home, and had a “particularly close relationship” with Michael, in which they “supported and relied on each other.” Reading between the lines, Gawker concludes that the guy wasn’t just secretly gay, he was “secretly gay-married.” (More Carl Kruger stories.)
