An Oregon man stabbed his four children—all under the age of 8—and his wife before torching his house yesterday, police believe. Firefighters arrived to douse the flames after someone called in the fire around 9am, and found the family inside. They pulled the bodies onto the lawn and worked desperately to revive them, reports the AP. Jordan Adam Criado, 51, reportedly stayed inside as the house filled with smoke, but suffered only mild smoke inhalation. “It's an extremely tragic situation,” says the local district attorney.

Autopsies on the victims are being performed, but officials believe all died from stab wounds and smoke inhalation. In an odd twist, Criado reported his 30-year-old wife missing just before dawn yesterday; police found her a few blocks from the home in a convenience store parking lot and drove her home. "What happened between 7:30 and 9:30 in roughly a two-hour time span is what we are trying to figure out right now," says the town's police chief. Officials are checking for any history of domestic violence, reports the Mail Tribune. (More Massachusetts stories.)
