Alcoholic Mayor Divides Wisconsin City

Sheboygan mayor Bob Ryan is an alcoholic who has fallen off the wagon four times in the two years he has been in office, resulting in bar fights, lawsuits, and YouTube embarrasment. Now this Wisconsin city of 50,000 in the biggest-drinking state in America is holding a raging debate over whether Ryan should be removed from office, reports the Wall Street Journal. "He's an embarrassment, a disgrace," says one resident who wants Ryan out of office. "He's given the city a black eye."

"If it happens once, OK, you move on, but this isn't his first time at the rodeo," says the vice president of the city council, which launched an investigation of the mayor in July (the results are due next week). Many citizens are trying to get enough signatures for a recall, but they have only 3,500 so far and need 4,121 by Nov. 1. "Ah, leave the mayor alone, he's just being a regular guy," says one supporter, who drinks at one of Ryan's regular pubs. "He likes to have a couple pops, that's what guys do."
