Despite news like this, experts say the US is home to about 18 million shopaholics, who spend more than the rest of us on clothes, shoes, and other wearable goods. So where are these compulsive shoppers (and their closets) located? Surprisingly, not in New York City (despite what Sex & the City may have taught you). Using US government data, spending transaction info from Citi, and other sources, Bundle put together a list of the top 20 shopaholic cities across the United States, based on average monthly spending on shoes, clothes, and other wear per household (the national average is $142):

  • 1. Washington, DC: $263 per month
  • 2. Arlington, Va.: $255
  • 3. Nashville: $251
  • 12. New York City: $199
  • 20. Los Angeles: $180
