A teacher fired from a private Florida high school returned several hours later with an assault rifle hidden in a guitar case and killed the school's headmistress before taking his own life. Students say the Spanish teacher, 28-year-old Shane Schumert, had been ignoring the subject this semester, and was spending most of the time talking about politics.

"Over the last several weeks, he seemed dark," a parent with a son in Schumert's class tells the Times-Union. "He repeatedly talked about the Communist Manifesto and Marxism. Something wasn't right." The murdered principal, 63-year-old Dale Regan, had worked at the Jacksonville school for more than 30 years. "The entire school family mourns the loss of our friend and leader," the school said in a statement. (More Florida stories.)
