A Republican activist is accused of multiple rapes, and faces up to life in prison if convicted. Gregory Peterson, 37, was a frequent host of barbecues and gatherings for GOP power players in his home state of Utah, which included the likes of Senator Orrin Hatch and Governor Gary Herbert. The cabin where these events took place, however, was also the setting where Peterson allegedly raped two of his victims, reports the Salt Lake Tribune.

A court in Salt Lake City charged Peterson with 23 felonies on Wednesday, including three counts of rape and two counts of aggravated kidnapping. The sexual assaults allegedly began 14 months ago when Peterson invited a woman to a movie but forced her at gunpoint back to his cabin, where he raped her.
