The crime beat is getting a little too real for TV reporters in Oakland. Last night, KTVU reporter Heather Holmes was doing a live report about a mugging that occurred earlier in the day when someone broke into the station's news van and stole her purse, reports KCBS. The kicker is that the van itself was parked in front of Oakland's police headquarters, as Holmes noted in a tweet of disbelief. But maybe it shouldn't be all that surprising: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the TV crews have become such regular victims in Oakland that stations frequently send them out with security guards in tow. (Otherwise, they might end up losing a camera or two, even in broad daylight.)
