The police chief of Peachtree City, Ga., is on leave as investigators figure out how he ended up shooting his wife in their bedroom early this morning, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. William McCollom called 911 about 4:15am to say he had accidentally shot 58-year-old Margaret McCollum. She survived but remains in critical condition and has not been able to speak to investigators from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, reports AP.

A GBI spokesperson would say only that the shooting took place in the bedroom, but she did not reveal what the chief said happened beforehand. The spokesperson did, however, correct an earlier report saying that the victim had been shot twice; she was hit only once. "There are a lot of things that we don't know yet about what took place that we need to know before we can make any decisions," says the local district attorney. (More police chiefs stories.)
