Airports are routinely ranked on things like arrival and departure times, but if there were a category for conspiracy theories, one airport would take first place every time: Denver International. Atlas Obscura rounds up some of the more bizarre ones surrounding the airport, which happens to be the largest by area in the US and second in the world. Here's a sample:
- Some think the runways are laid out in a pattern resembling a swastika, which meshes with the next one on the list...
- The stone dedication marker at the airport references New World Airport Commission, which surely must be code for "the New World Order (aka the New Nazi Party)."
- The airport has an underground train system for passengers, but it also has tunnels built for a baggage system that was subsequently abandoned. The tunnels lead nowhere now. "Pair that with the rumor of buried buildings under the airport, and you have the perfect setting for a conspiracy about an underground bunker or eventual underground city."
- Not helping all this is the 32-foot statue of a blue mustang outside the airport. Its eyes glow red at night, and an accident during its creation killed the sculptor. Inside the airport, statues of gargoyles overlook the baggage area.
