(Newser) – They say crime doesn't pay—but the 25 lowest-paying legitimate jobs in America, as compiled by 24/7 Wall St, aren't much better. And the bottom 10—eight of which are related to the food-service industry—are especially bleak. The median weekly earnings for people working those jobs hover right around half of the $832 median weekly income of all US occupations. Here are the 10 smallest weekly paychecks you can earn in America:

  1. Counter attendants (cafeteria, food concession, coffee shop): $374
  2. Dishwashers: $389
  3. Combined food preparation and serving workers (fast food): $396
  4. Cashiers: $414
  5. Food preparation workers: $419
  6. Dining room and cafeteria attendants: $420
  7. Sewing machine operators: $437
  8. Maids and housekeeping cleaners: $441
  9. Hosts and hostesses (restaurant, lounge, coffee shop): $442
