Police say a man shot and killed a woman and two children at an apartment complex in Phoenix on Christmas Day before getting into a shootout with officers. Police were called to the scene Monday afternoon on a report of a shooting and found a woman dead outside, the AP reports. Sgt. Jonathan Howard says officers tried to talk to the suspect, who had barricaded himself inside an apartment. Howard says the unidentified man indicated to them that he had killed two children. Several hours later, Howard says, the man began shooting at officers. One officer was injured. After a brief exchange of gunfire, the suspect was taken into custody. The man did not appear to be injured.

Howard says after the shootout, police found the bodies of a 10-month-old and an 11-year-old inside the apartment. Police say the gunman was an out-of-towner visiting Phoenix for Christmas. Police have classed the killings as domestic violence but haven't disclosed what relationship the gunman had with the victims. The wounded officer was injured by shrapnel and is listed in stable condition. "It's beyond crazy," apartment complex resident Gibson Daoud tells the Phoenix Republic. "It's as sh--ty as it can get on Christmas Day." The complex was locked down during the six-hour standoff, with residents already in their homes not allowed to leave and others not allowed to enter.
