Jerry Falwell’s conservative Christian Liberty University has suspended the student Democratic Club for supporting candidates “directly contrary to the mission” of the school, the Lynchburg News Advance reports. Virginia Democrats are up in arms. “I urge the leadership of Liberty University to reverse this attack on the liberty of its students,” Gov.Tim Kaine said. A Democratic candidate called the move “deeply troubling.”

“It is even more problematic that the school has decided to continue to recognize the campus Republicans,” the candidate continued. University president Jerry Falwell Jr. tried to put out the fire. “That club still has the right to exist,” he said, though it cannot use the name Liberty University. “They are good, Christian kids who sit with me at ball games. I just hope they find a pro-life family organization to affiliate with.” (More Democratic Party stories.)
