The ninth edition of the father-son Bowden Bowl saw Clemson coach Tommy Bowden win his third in a row against Bowden pére of Florida State. It was a sweet upset for the unranked Tigers, who took advantage of the Seminoles' poor fundamentals on defense with strong play by junior quarterback Cullen Harper.

A frustrated Bobby Bowden classified his team's play as "inept" and "the worst I've seen." While the latter referred to the team's defense, a retooled offense was also disappointing. New offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher watched his unit achieve only three points and 62 yards in the first half. (More NCAA stories.)
