Kiefer Sutherland is starring in a new series, but you won't find it on traditional TV. The 24 star plays a hit man trying to save his soul in The Confession, an online serial that made its debut on Hulu this week, reports the Independent. The series—consisting of ten 5-to-10-minute episodes—largely takes place in a confessional booth where Sutherland speaks to a Catholic priest, played by John Hurt. Flashbacks explore the violent past of Sutherland's character.

The show was shot in New York before Sutherland began rehearsals for Broadway's That Championship Season. Critics are praising Confession's high production values, but they're split on whether the series is likely to mark the start of a new trend or the last gasp of an old one. Its makers have obviously studied plenty of other online thrillers, and the results, "while crisp and attractive, tend to support the notion that the rat-a-tat nature of the web series is better suited for comedy than drama," decides Mike Hale at the New York Times.
