Indiana State Fair Open After Tragedy

A somber crowd made its way into the reopened state fair today following Saturday night's deadly stage collapse, which shuttered the fair yesterday. The large stage remained in ruins, surrounded by yellow police tape, but a smaller one hosted a memorial for the five lost in the disaster. “We come today with hearts that are broken but also hearts that are full,” Gov. Mitch Daniels said in the ceremony.

As fairgoers attempted to help those caught in the collapse, “there was a hero every 10 feet on Saturday night,” he noted. “I cannot tell you how proud I am to be the employee of six and a half million people like that.” Meanwhile, investigators are looking into whether the tragedy could have been averted.
