Maybe that controversial decision by the Susan G. Komen foundation will end up helping Planned Parenthood: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg today pledged $250,000 of his own money to the group to pay for breast cancer screening after Komen yanked its funds, reports the New York Times. Planned Parenthood says it has seen a surge in donations since the flap became public, and it got a different $250,000 pledge yesterday. It needs about $700,000 to make up for the Komen cuts.

“Politics have no place in health care,” said Bloomberg. “Breast cancer screening saves lives and hundreds of thousands of women rely on Planned Parenthood for access to care. We should be helping women access that care, not placing barriers in their way.” (More Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation stories.)
