North Carolina already refuses to recognize same-sex unions, but a new amendment could go further, making sure that only traditional marriages are recognized—and a gay rights group is running a fairly shocking ad campaign against it. Images that recall segregation, like one featuring separate water fountains for straight and gay people, feature the tagline, "On May 8th, make history. Don't repeat it," BuzzFeed reports.

Every1Against1 is running the campaign against Amendment One, and the group claims that the amendment "aims to turn all unmarried couples—whether same-sex or opposite-sex—into second-class citizens unworthy of basic dignity and fair treatment." The amendment specifically declares that "marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized by this State." (More gay rights stories.)
