Bill Richardson will back Barack Obama for president today, giving the Illinois senator one of the Democratic party's most coveted endorsements. The New Mexico governor and former presidential candidate called Obama a "once-in-a-lifetime leader that can bring our nation together and restore America's moral leadership in the world" in a statement obtained by the AP.

Both Obama and Hillary Clinton had aggressively courted Richardson, the only Hispanic governor, who has been mentioned as a possible VP. In the leaked statement Richardson calls Clinton a "distinguished leader with vast experience" but says Obama "will be "a historical and great president." The Richardson will campaign alongside Obama in Portland, Oregon, today. (More Bill Richardson stories.)
