Despite Alex Ovechkin's record breaking 61st goal of the season, and a 3-2 besting of Carolina, the Caps needed more, the Washington Post reports—like a win in regulation. Thanks to Viktor Kozlov's effort in the shootout, Washington earned two points, but a net gain of only one on the 'Canes, leaving Carolina still four points ahead in the Southeast with five games left. In other NHL action:

  • The Flyers took their fourth straight game, with Mike Richards tallying the winner over the Rangers two minutes into OT. The 2-1 victory puts Philly one point behind New York in Eastern Conference playoff position jockeying
  • Dan Ellis notched his fifth career shuout, stopping 36 shots as the Predators bested Columbus, 3-0. The victory marks the second straight for Nashville.
