Authorities have cracked the case of who messed with an officer's fast-food sandwich—and it was the officer himself, inadvertently. The odd case is out of Indianapolis, where an officer with the Marion County Sheriff's Office went public with a damning accusation about a local McDonald's, reports WTHR. The officer, identified only as "DJ," said he unwrapped his McChicken sandwich at work to find that somebody had taken "several small bites" of his sandwich. "I know I didn't eat it," he told the station at the time. He figured it had to be a McDonald's employee who hated police, so he went back to the restaurant to confront a manager and to make the chain deal with the tamperer "in an appropriate way." McDonald's investigated, as did the sheriff's office. It was the latter who identified DJ himself as the sandwich biter, albeit an absent-minded one.

The officer "took a bite out of the sandwich upon starting his shift at the Marion County Jail, then placed it in the refrigerator in a break room," says a statement from the sheriff's office. "He returned nearly seven hours later having forgotten that he had previously bitten the sandwich." DJ has now apologized to McDonald's. The Washington Post notes that a Subway employee was falsely accused of tampering with an officer's beverage in Utah a few years ago, but it also cites an incident in Florida last year in which an officer was sickened after eating Taco Bell burritos that were doused in bleach. How the latter incident happened remains unclear. (More McDonald's stories.)
