The hits keep coming for the NRA. In recent months, the gun rights group has been accused of improper expenditures and eyebrow-raising payments to some board members, and in June it even shuttered its NRATV. Now Talking Points Memo reports that three board members are stepping down, claiming their efforts to seek information on alleged wrongdoings have been "rebuffed at every turn" and that their "confidence in the NRA's leadership has been shattered," per the letter they sent Thursday to their colleagues. Last month, motivational speaker Sean Maloney, gun rights activist Timothy Knight, and NRA fundraiser Esther Schneider demanded an outside investigation of the group's activities, saying in a letter then that such a move would "remove all doubt regarding our Association's direction, and allow us to return to our mission of protecting our Second Amendment."

For their efforts, the three say in Thursday's letter, they were "stonewalled, accused of disloyalty, stripped of committee assignments, and denied effective counsel necessary to properly discharge our responsibilities as Board members." In a written statement, NRA President Carolyn Meadows says these three resignations have been accepted and that the organization is eager to get to work with their replacements, notes the Washington Post, which adds other board members are still sticking by NRA leadership. "Don't let the door hit you in the back on your way out," was one such member's reaction to the three who are leaving, adding that they "made a treacherous attempt to overthrow leadership and lost" and are now "unhappy nobody trusts them."
