(Newser) – Should you find yourself having relationship troubles, police would probably ask you not do what they say one Wisconsin man did Wednesday. According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, 45-year-old Darrel Moll called and texted his wife Wednesday claiming he had been hit over the head and tied up as he locked up at the end of his work shift. He said his kidnappers forced him to contact her under threat of death. "Several demands were made via text message to the wife," the sheriff's office says on Facebook. She called police, who found the man at his workplace, zip-tied to a chair and calling for help. What they say they didn't find: any evidence his story was true.

Rather, they accuse him of making up the story and tying himself to the chair in a bid to get sympathy from his wife because they had been having problems. Authorities say he was hoping she would show up at his workplace herself and find him there in distress, rather than sending the cops to find him. Moll allegedly admitted to staging the whole thing, and was arrested on charges of obstructing an officer and unlawful use of a telephone, WKOW reports. (Read more weird crimes stories.)
