Looking to see the best of the countryside on your summer vacation? National Geographic lists its top 50 road trips, from simply gorgeous to quirky and off-beat:

  • Cheese Trail, Vermont: On this 280-mile loop, sample gorgonzola, gouda, feta, chèvre, and more.
  • Finger Lakes, New York: Go vineyard-hopping on this 75-mile trip.
  • Big Island, Hawaii: Driving around the island offers a taste of everything from jungle to farmland, beaches to lava deserts.

  • Amalfi Coast, Italy: Italy's most scenic stretch of coastline features imposing bluffs, hillside villages, and luxurious gardens.
  • Flower Route, Netherlands: The perfect European spring drive, you’ll enjoy the famous Dutch tulip as well as hyacinths, narcissi, daffodils, and more.
  • Pioneer Trail, Nebraska: Take a trip through history on this 280-mile drive, visiting villages and log cabins.
  • Pirate Route, Jamaica: Visit what was once the base for pirates who plundered Spain's New World treasure ships.
