Carol Porter doesn’t just want to be the first lady of Georgia, she wants to be lieutenant governor. Porter’s husband, state House Minority Leader DuBose Porter, is running for governor, and she, a political novice who’s never held elected office, is running to be his No. 2, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Critics have called her bid a gimmick to help her husband win the Democratic primary, but Porter insists she’s a legitimate candidate.

“If this is a gimmick and it’s going to get corruption out of government, you can give me a dozen,” she says. Governor and lt. governor candidates don’t share a ticket in Georgia, but the two will run as a team. “We will be sharing the same message,” she says. It’ll be an uphill climb for both to win; Porter’s currently unopposed in the lt. governor primary, but she'll face a well-funded Republican incumbent in the general. (More Carol Porter stories.)
