The Vatican shouldn't be allowed to let this latest round of abuse scandals fade away until some major changes are made, writes Peggy Noonan. The defensive, angry people at the highest levels of the church are too big a part of the problem to fix it, Noonan writes in the Wall Street Journal, urging the Vatican to get some new blood—and, most importantly, some women—into positions of power.

"As a nun said to me this week," Noonan writes, "if a woman had been sitting beside a bishop transferring a priest with a history of abuse, she would have said: "Hey, wait a minute!" And it's that very inclination to speak up that's so key. "Once, leaders of the Vatican felt that silence would protect the church. But now anyone who cares about it must come to understand that only speaking, revealing, admitting and changing will save the church." (More Vatican stories.)
