An Iranian newspaper controlled by the government has called French First Lady Carla Bruni and actress Isabelle Adjani "prostitutes" in an editorial slamming them for signing a petition calling for the release of a woman who has been sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. Iranian state TV also attacked Bruni's "immorality." Bruni signed the petition and also wrote an open letter last week to the condemned woman, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Telegraph reports.

“Why shed your blood and deprive your children of their mother?" Bruni asks in the letter. "Because you have lived, because you have loved, because you’re a woman, and because you’re an Iranian? Everything within me refuses to accept this." (More Iran stories.)
