A veteran of Facebook who served as the Obama campaign's digital organizer is now trying to transform charity with a new website that links donors and causes via social networking, the New York Times reports. The nonprofit Jumo, created by Chris Hughes, is unique among charity-based social networks in that it does not focus primarily on collecting and distributing donations.
Instead, Jumo seeks to build strong ties between donor and organization, allowing members to follow updates on causes of their choosing and giving charities tools for focused fundraising. Particular causes will have dedicated pages on the site, and people can create their own. “The more connected that individual is to an issue they care about, the higher probability there is they will stay involved over a longer period of time,” Hughes says.
