At least 20 students are dead after unknown gunmen shot up a hostel in Nigeria, a police source tells the BBC. Al-Jazeera puts the number of dead at at least 25, and a lecturer at the nearby Federal Polytechnic Mubi campus said more than 40 were killed, but that has not been confirmed. He says the students were told to line up and state their names, but adds that it wasn't clear why some were killed while others were allowed to live; the dead included both Muslims and Christians. The attack came days after a major operation in the town against militant group Boko Haram, which is fighting for Islamic law in Nigeria. (More Nigeria stories.)
